You’ve invested in a website, it’s live… and it barely gets any visits or enquiries. It’s a very common situation, and it can almost always be fixed. The important thing is to find the real cause before spending more money on ads or redesigns.
Here are the most common reasons a website gets no traffic, ordered from most serious to least obvious, and what to do about each one.
1. Your site has technical errors that Google sees and you don’t
It’s more common than you’d think: the home page looks fine, but other pages return errors, the sitemap won’t load or the server has run out of space. If your site only works thanks to a cached copy, you may see it fine while Google runs into errors.
What to do: check your site in Google Search Console, look at the indexed pages report and manually open your key pages, the sitemap and the robots.txt file. If anything fails, that’s the first thing to fix.
2. Google doesn’t know your site exists
A new site, or one that has never been added to Google Search Console, can take a long time to show up in results.
What to do: verify your domain in Search Console, submit the sitemap and request indexing of your main pages.
3. There’s no content that answers what people search for
A site with five pages about “us” and “our services” has very few chances of appearing on Google. People search for solutions to specific problems: “how much does…”, “how to automate…”, “what is…”.
What to do: start a blog with articles that answer your customers’ real questions. Every good article is a new way into your website.
4. Your site is slow
If it takes too long to load, especially on mobile, visitors leave and Google takes note. The usual culprits are huge images, too many plugins, heavy sliders and underpowered hosting.
What to do: measure your speed with PageSpeed Insights, optimise images, remove what adds nothing and use a well-configured cache.
5. Weak titles and descriptions
The title and description shown on Google are your shop window. If they’re generic or repeated, nobody clicks even if you show up.
What to do: write a clear title for each page with its main keyword, and a description that makes people want to click.
6. Your site isn’t built for mobile
Most visits come from mobile, and Google mainly evaluates the mobile version of your site.
What to do: browse your site on your phone as if you were a customer: is it easy to read? Are the buttons easy to tap? Does the form work?
7. Nobody links to your site
Links from other websites are a trust signal for Google. A site with no external links has a harder time.
What to do: list your business on Google Business Profile and in directories for your sector, partner with other companies and publish useful content others will want to cite.
8. Visitors arrive, but don’t convert
Sometimes the problem isn’t traffic but enquiries: the site doesn’t clearly explain what you offer, doesn’t build trust or doesn’t make it easy to get in touch.
What to do: make it clear on your home page what you do and who for, add visible calls to action and simplify your contact form.
Quick checklist
- Do all your pages load without errors?
- Is your site verified in Google Search Console with the sitemap submitted?
- Do you publish useful content regularly?
- Does it load fast on mobile?
- Does every page have a unique title and description?
- Is it easy to contact you from any page?
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to see an improvement?
Once fixed, technical errors usually show results within weeks. Ranking with content takes months, but the results build up over time.
Do I need to pay for ads?
Ads can bring instant visits, but if your site has technical issues or doesn’t convert, you’ll be paying for visits that never turn into customers. Fix the foundations first.
Do I need to rebuild my website?
Not always. Often it’s enough to fix errors, optimise and add content. If you’re thinking about rebuilding it, you may be interested in custom website or WordPress: which is right for your business.
Is your website not bringing you customers?
I’ll review your website, tell you what’s going wrong and how to fix it, starting with what has the most impact. Ask me for a review.
